Nobel Peace Prize

Mediatec was a key partner to the Host Broadcaster when President Barack Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on October 10th, 2009. The company was involved in both the production of international coverage and in various nation’s individual coverage, assisting broadcasters with stand-up positions and live reports to their home countries.

Mediatec OB-6 covered all the action outside and inside the Grand Hotel, where 10 000 people with torches greeted Mr. Barack Obama and his wife Michelle on the balcony of the Nobel suite. We also covered the banquet held in the Mirror Hall in the hotel.

On behalf of the European Broadcasting Union, Mediatec build up a rights holder’s room at the SAS-hotel in downtown Oslo, receiving the international signal through a local media bank then distributing the signal to a number of editing suites and play out facilities. We also provided a stand-up position connected to the EBU-office. In addition, we provided several stand-up positions with uplink facilities outside Oslo City Hall where Barack Obama received his diploma and prize.

Our vehicle, with a 45 meter telescope mast and remote controlled camera, was positioned right at the heart of the action in Oslo city centre close to the Royal Palace.

Mediatec invests in new remote camera systems.

During the year have we invested in two new remote camera systems, the SONY Z-700 and Sportcams 4 HD from TV Skyline. The cameras have different areas of application and are both High Definition and Standard Definition capable. Setup can be done as stand alone or together with multiple cameras in fibre network. Preset positions are available and the cameras can be operated over long distances both in and outdoors.

The Sportcam 4 has a unique fibre interface over which HD and SD signals, audio, communication, remote data and even 220-voltage power can be sent. This makes it possible to locate the camera up two 2km away from the OB unit and supply everything using just one simple SMPTE fiber cable.

For more information, please visit our webpage under Wireless and Camera Solutions. A downloadable technical specification will soon be available at the product site.

If you are interested in these products or wish to make a reservation, please call +46 8 799 35 00 or contact us at broadcast.se@mediatecgroup.com. Thank you for your interest!

About TED

TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a four-day journey into the future.” The diverse audience — CEOs, scientists, creatives, philanthropists — is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono. TED was first held in Monterey, California, in 1984. In 2001, Chris Anderson’s Sapling Foundation acquired TED from its founder, Richard Saul Wurman. In recent years, TED has expanded to include an international conference, TEDGlobal; media initiatives, including TED Talks and TED.com; and the TED Prize. TED2010, “What the world Needs Now,” will be held Feb 9-13, 2010, in Long Beach, California, with a simulcast in Palm Springs, California. TEDGlobal 2009, “The Substance of Things Not Seen,” will be held July 21–24, 2009, in Oxford, UK and TEDIndia will be held in November 2009.

Mediatec signs new contract with Biathlon Event AB

Since 2002, Mediatec has delivered products and services to Biathlon Event AB, who work under the Swedish Ski Shooting Association and arrange all World Cup Ski Shooting competitions in Sweden. We’re pleased to announce that a new, 5-year contract through to 2014, has been signed. As it stands today, the flexible contract covers the delivery of mobile big screens and a new results system for the display of live broadcasts and results on the same screen.

Mediatec’s IT department has previously had a unique relationship with the German company SIWIDATA, supplier to the European Ski Shooting association (IBU) for the delivery of results displays for all World Cup and World Championship events. This relationship led to the creation of a system able to present results on big screens. Previously, results had been displayed on a separate monochrome screen. With the new system, the public are able to watch live pictures and at the same time, see results integrated in the picture in realtime.

Over the 2009-2010 Swedish ski shooting season, Mediatec will supply a mobile LED trailer, 54m2 in size and in 16:9 format as well as one 70m2 in size. In this way, 54m2 of the screen will be used to show the ’TV image’ while the remaining 16m2 will present competition results in realtime.

As well as this, flightcase production equipment in full broadcast quality (Triax) will be supplied for arena production. This will be used to compliment TV broadcasting, which will also be produced by Mediatec.

We handled the press conferences using only 10 people - a uniquely low number for such a production and the result of multi-tasking within the group. MEDIATEC CHOOSES EVS TO PRODUCE & BROADCAST NORWEGIAN PREMIUM SPORTS CHANNELS

Liège, Belgium – 04 September 2009 – Mediatec Broadcast, specialized in managing large scale events in sports and entertainment, has chosen EVS Instant Tapeless Technology for the production and broadcast of two premium sports channels in Norway.

Mediatec Broadcast, which is part of the Mediatec Group, one of Europe’s leading corporations in live events and television productions, chose to work with EVS Instant Tapeless Technology to produce and broadcast Viasat Sport in Norway and the new Viasat Football. Viasat is owned by the Swedish media company Modern Times Group (MTG).

Arne Stenstadvold, Technical Manager at Mediatec Broadcast: "Last October, MTG asked Mediatec Broadcast to develop a playout platform for the new premium sports channel Viasat Sport. At the time, the new Viasat Football, which had been airing for three years already as SportN, also needed a system with a much higher degree of automation. Our main concern was to find a flexible and open solution for the transfer of files to and from our Final Cut Server SAN. The integration of the production and playout servers with the Morpheus automation system from Snell was also considered. Since EVS proposed solutions that would meet these demands, and also because the crew was used to working with the loop-recording technology and appreciated its speed, we decided to use EVS technology for both channels.

EVS provided a series of HD/SD XT[2] production and playout servers handling all ingest and playout requirements for both Viasat Sport and Viasat Football. The ingest control, metadata management, and production content management is executed with EVS IPDirector software and Snell’s Morpheus automation system. The fast turnaround productions that include live analysis and highlights packages are produced with EVS’ MulticamLSM application. The EVS servers are interconnected to a highly efficient Hybrid network, EVS XNet[2] for live and instant sharing across the entire production platform, and a Gigabit Ethernet network for bi-directional file transfers to and from the MediaBank, a 20TB Apple Xsan system with a Final Cut Server. The 24/7 rundown of both channels is managed with the Morpheus automation controlling the XT[2] ports.

We are accustomed to the speed and functionality of the XT[2] servers and wanted to combine these features with an automated playout system for our new transmission control. The fact that EVS technology can handle the media management that is connected to our Final Cut Pro system, allows content to be shared between production, post-production and archiving in a very efficient way. All material cleared for transmission is then managed by Morpheus, which controls playout of content on and between several XT[2] servers in the system. We are pleased to say that both Snell and EVS have made a big effort in making this system and workflow possible,” said Eirik Nakken, Technical Operations Manager at Mediatec Broadcast.

EVS is a reliable partner of the Mediatec Group. This turnkey project and the integration with Snell’s Morpheus automation system enabled us to streamline our productions while being more efficient and cost-effective,” said Paul Henriksen, CEO of Mediatec Broadcast.

Julien Fraipont, EVS Sales Manager of Scandinavia, adds: “The decision of Mediatec Broadcast to choose EVS clearly demonstrates our ability to deliver a combined hardware/software solution that not only provides benefits in terms of the production and turnaround of both channels, but also illustrates EVS’ commitment to an open architecture where the integration with the Morpheus Automation system from Snell and the Apple Final Cut Server is seamless.

DR Slotskoncerter 2009

For many years, the Slotkoncerts (Castle Concerts) have been a tradition in which the DR UnderholdningsOrkestret (Danish Radio Orchestra) performs pieces by famous artists on stage with the artist themselves.

This year, it is 50 years since the Bee Gees arrived on the Australian music-scene and Slotkoncerter was proud to present Robin Gibb live on stage, performing classic Bee Gees songs (Who doesn’t know ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and ‘How Deep Is Your Love’?)

With the 45 strong DR Underholdingsorchestra and David Firman conducting, tickets had never sold so quickly and 65 000 people were watching the show on Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th of August.

The stage, supplied by Seelite, was covered in blue fabric, making it look like a castle taken straight out of a fairytale. As the show is recorded for a TV-broadcast in the autumn, light, video and sound have to be perfect and fulfill tough demands.

This year, there were 2 Image screens, Lighthouse R7, delivered by ComTech while Massteknik were able to supply new Spider F30 background graphic screens for the first time. The Bee Gees production used the 5 screens, each 12 m2 in size, to show time-coded graphics created for each individual song. As a result, the whole show looked like one great concept where light, sound and especially video were part of the song itself.

The public simply loved it, singing along, dancing and reliving Bee Gees memories from “the good old days”.

The Spider screens were perfect for the job. Lightweight, easy to set-up and able to run with minimum power.

The small number of cables made the whole setup look ‘clean’, and the stable noise (flicker) free picture looked perfect on camera.

Mediatec - Denmark's largest sports production provider

Mediatec Broadcast has now taken the big step up to become Denmark’s largest OB supplier of sport productions by agreeing a contract with the sports channel Canal 9, which is owned by Canal+/TV4. The 3-year contract means that Mediatec Broadcast will be the exclusive supplier of 2 SAS Liga matches per week up until season 2011-2012. The project includes delivery of OB technology, producers, a complete technical crew as well as responsibility for production planning and coordination. The agreement also covers a large, 12 camera production with studio match analysis for one hour and a smaller, 6 camera production with a small pitchside studio for every match.

The new agreement makes us the biggest OB supplier of sport productions in Denmark. Unlike earlier live broadcasts from Denmark, we’re now supplying our own producer. Together with our special cameras, this assignment is a great example of a comprehensive solution delivery of the Mediatec Broadcast concept, says Carin Eriksson, Production Manager for Mediatec Broadcast ApS.

Mediatec Broadcast has previously had a 3-year agreement with Viasat to cover a large number of matches as well as an agreement with Danish TV2 Sport Viasat under which we covered all live league matches in HD. This agreement has now been extended for another 3-year period.

Control Room 6

In the fall of 2008, Mediatec Broadcast were approached by Viasat with an inquiry to set up a new sports channel. Since 2005, we already had SportN up and running from Bjerke. The new channel was to be a sister channel with the name Viasat Sport. Could we look into this?

We could. It soon became clear that it would be difficult, or even impossible, to reach a satisfactory solution using the same control room as SportN. It also became clear that Viasat wanted a higher degree of automation for the new channel, thus reducing the need for crew.

The solution was Control Room 6, which is a compact two-channel playout room with one large broadcast position, one smaller and one technical control position. Both broadcast positions are needed for situations when, for example, two Champions League games are played at the same time. The automation is indeed high, with obvious facilities for manual controlling. Control Room 6 is also well prepared for upgraded technology in the future.

Sesilåmi 52 km cross-country race

NOR 036 is an HD configured SNG still doing a lot of SD work. The last weekend in March 2009, we had a newspaper client who wanted live streaming from the finish area in the Traditional Sesilåmi 52 km cross-country race. Family and friends would be able watch their relatives arrive tired but happy through the newspaper's web pages. The reason for using SNG for this purpose was of course missing infrastructure at the site. We therefore supplied NOR 036, which transmitted a 4,5 Mhz feed to the newspaper to downlink. No need to say, this was successful.

Vasaloppet

On Sunday, March 1, it’s time for the 85th edition of Vasaloppet.

The first Vasaloppet was perfomed by Gustav Vasa in 1521 when escaping from the Danes who wanted to see him dead and wanted Sweden to be a part of the Danish Kingdom. He started in Mora and his destination was Norway, but he didn’t come further than the village of Sälen before he was convinced to return to Mora. Later he became the King of Sweden.

Mr Vasa only used one ski pole and the distance of nearly 90 kilometers was mostly performed through a snowy forest.

Today, participating in the Vasaloppet it’s a little easier. With prepared tracks, two ski poles and regular refills of blueberry soup, the competitors are able to accomplish the race with slightly more ease.

For those of us who never would expose ourselves to an effort like Vasaloppet, SVT has transmitted the Vasaloppet since 1966. To make the broadcasting during the whole race possible, Prisma, part of Mediatec Group, provides no less than four OB trailers. This year Prisma is being supported by the sister company Mobile Links, supplying all the mobile broadcasting links between the nine checkpoints.

If you are a spectator on location, Massteknik, also part of Mediatec Group, provides two mobile displays, size XL. Everything to enhance your experience.

Special technology for the Swedish qualifiers for Eurovision Song Contest 2009

Every year since 1959, songwriters and artists have been competing to become Sweden’s selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. In 2002, the Swedish qualifiers became a travelling show with a number of contests in different Swedish cities. The final round is traditionally held in Stockholm’s Globen Arena.

This new way of carrying the competition through meant increasing demands for the broadcast technology. This is why Prisma, part of Mediatec Group, has been contractor of the OB technology for the past five years. This year, competitions are hosted by Gothenburg, Skellefteå, Leksand, Malmö and Norrköping. And Stockholm for the final round. On each of these occasions, Prisma will supply one OB trailer with nine cameras, one audio trailer and staff for all venues.

All image technology is handled inside the OB trailer. The audio trailer guarantees the sound transmitted to the viewers is perfect in both stereo and 5.1. In addition, Prisma Mobile Links is the supplier of links from the venues and from National Swedish Television, with the assistance of Prisma’s fibre network which is installed in certain arenas. SNG will be supplied where there is not a fibre network.

The first competition takes place on Saturday, February 7, although preparations are already at a late stage. As usual Henric Wilsson, Prisma, is in charge of the technology used in the production. He is trusted by Swedish National Television to carry the complicated production through. This year he has developed a solution of his own to handle signals for 30 monitors spread out over the venues.
