500 million viewers?

On Sunday 6th November Mediatec ensured that an estimated 500 million viewers could catch the excitement of the Miss World 2011 crowning at Earls Court in London. Their large production unit, Mediatec HD2, was utilized by a professional production crew of around 20 people. It was on-site for a full week of rehearsals before the actual show on Sunday. Cranes, Steadicam, links and robotic cameras were all used in the production, which was transmitted live to 150 countries around the globe.

David Morgan, head of TV production for Miss World says: “For a live transmission like this we were anxious to get a technical provider that could guarantee top quality equipment and crew and still stay within budget. We made some changes in the setup during the rehearsal period but Mediatec delivered on the mark every time. That’s what counts.”

According to Allan Parsons, Mediatec project manager, HD2 could easily accommodate all the different wishes from Production.

To find out more about this production or what Mediatec can do for your production please give Mats Berggren a call on +46 10 4540316 or write a line to mats.berggren@mediatecgroup.com. For UK productions you can reach Allan at allan.parsons@mediatecgroup.com .

Election Day in Denmark

From the point that the ruling party announced the general election in Denmark, it was only 3 weeks until the election was held.

That put the pressure on the opposition as well as the local broadcasters. This time, Mediatec also felt the pressure as the Danish public broadcaster, Danmarks Radio, largely relied on Mediatec to cover a major part of the outdoor events during the all evening election special on election night, Thursday 15th September.

In less than 2.5 weeks Mediatec planned, organized, equipped and crewed 5 large OB-units with more than 60 cameras, 10 EVS’s, large lenses, radio links and hundreds of other details. Among the details where the planning of parking two of Mediatec’s largest OB-units in the yard of Christiansborg, where the parliament resides, to cover party festivities and hold announcer positions.

This immense task was possible to perform in such a short time thanks to Mediatec’s skilled and dedicated project managers, engineers and operators. With a large fleet of high performance OB-units under Mediatec’s control, the planning was made a little easier but it was still quite a jigsaw puzzle, with lots of pieces that needed to find their right place.

Technical coordinator for the election, Linus Malmborg, says -“We used equipment from all over the Mediatec group and doing this during the same time as the IBC exhibition took place didn’t make it easier”.

Summing it up, it was a very successful operation with an equally very happy client. And the opposition won by just a few percent.

Mediatec is producing all games in the IIHF World Championships in Slovakia

The IIHF World Championships is the biggest annual winter sport event in the world. Television broadcasting is being produced by Mediatec for the sixth year in a row. 250 million viewers in 110 countries are expected to follow the tournament that started on April 29th and ends on May 15th. Behind the cameras, Mediatec’s crew of 82 people is capturing world class ice hockey experiences for the international television audience.

Whilst the world’s greatest ice hockey nations are competing in Championships in Slovakia, Mediatec is producing television broadcasts at the highest international standard with full HDTV coverage of all 56 games. Mediatec is filming and providing broadcasters around the world with pictures, support, live-statistics and more.

21 cameras are used at every game and all have a unique function. The positioning of the cameras is planned in detail, from the remote-controlled in-goal cameras to the overhead centre circle cameras. There are cameras positioned to capture the atmosphere providing an aerial view of the stadium, while others are there to show close ups and re-runs.

“Together, the 21 cameras cover all different angles of the game, helping to convey depth and variety that creates world class ice-hockey experiences for the audience” says Kenneth Paterson, CEO of the Mediatec Group.

In total there are 82 staff working for Mediatec in Slovakia during the tournament. About one third are stationed in Bratislava, one third in Kosice and one third are working with Viasat Sport.

“Everyone behind the cameras are from Mediatec, unlike the commentators and reporters that the audience sees and hears. They are from the TV-companies”, explains Kenneth Paterson.

During the IIHF World Championships Mediatec Broadcast Sweden AB (a part of the Mediatec Group) is working on behalf of Infront Sport & Media, the commercial partner to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) that handles media and marketing rights for the IIHF World Championship. Mediatec is producing, distributing and supervising the tournament administration. In 2006, an agreement was reached between Dream Team Production and Infront before the tournament in Riga. In 2008 the Dream Team became a part of Mediatec.

“The first time we broadcast the IIHF World Championships was in Riga 2006, so there is a lot of experience within Mediatec. Now we have a contract until 2013. Mediatec has been assigned to produce the Championships broadcasts because we are considered a reliable supplier with a high level of competence that enables us to contribute innovative solutions and ensures that the broadcast maintain the highest international standard”, says Kenneth Paterson.

Skiing along for another weekend

Still on a high from the “Vasaloppet” production, Mediatec sped into their next skiing adventure. This year’s final of the “Ski Classics”, was held at Norefjell in Norway, not far from Oslo, where the World Skiing Championships finished a couple of weeks ago. The winner from Vasaloppet, Jörgen Brink, also attended Norefjell, to test his stamina in an extremely tough competition, with a course stretching 65km of mountainous landscape.

Mediatec worked with IEC, supplying the host feed with our flagship truck HD1, sixteen cameras are hooked up to the unit. In addition, Mediatec also provided two uplinks, with three additional cameras on each site.

“Due to the terrain and lack of local infrastructure, it was necessary to use uplinks to distribute the signals from distant parts of the track”, said Mediatec’s production coordinator Axel Engström, who was also responsible for co-coordinating three snowmobiles with wireless cameras, a helicopter and a relaying airplane. Axel was part of a fortyeight men team provided by Mediatec to bring this spectacular race to television audiences across the world.

As well as the Ski Classics, Mediatec accomplished other productions in the same weekend, covering events such as Football, Handball, Ice hockey, Basketball, a concert and a corporate event. Another busy weekend down and dusted!

90 km of camera cable!

The first Sunday in March every year is traditionally the day of the ski race, Vasaloppet. The race first took place in 1922 to honor the Swedish king “Gustav Vasa” who is said to having escaped Danish troops by skiing through the forests of Dalarna, where the race now is held between the villages Sälen and Mora.

The main race on Sunday usually draws more than 15 000 participants in all categories struggling to finish the race as fast as possible. The winner usually crosses the line after about 4 hours of hard work, when the majority of the skiers still have many hours to go. During the week about 59000 people participate in different ski events.

To cover this race for SVT, Mediatec has 31 cameras along the track all connected to the same truck. The truck is the Mediatec unit HD2, with a workspace for 30 persons in one single unit.

To be able to run the cameras over such long distances Mediatec has developed a way to connect the cameras to the local fiber network and still remain in full control of all the camera functions such as paint control, tallies and communication. The fiber devices have a proven track record from earlier events such as alpine skiing, biathlon and city marathons.

Jens Envall, chief engineer at Mediatec says: -“Since the truck is parked at the midpoint of the race most of the fibers have enough light budgets for the GVG cameras. At the start and finish line we use a multiplex solution, still with full control, called Geckoflex from GVG.

We have long experience of doing the race for SVT but this is the first time we do it with just one unit and it is a very complex setup involving wireless cameras, helicopters, SNG units and of course a lot of fiber networking.”

To give the live audience the ultimate enjoyment Mediatec delivers three Mobile LED Screens in different sizes. As a complement to the TV-production Mediatec supply a 9-camera production exclusively for the screens. During the whole week the common people can follow their relatives live through IP-TV from the check-points Sälen, Mångsbodarna, Evertsberg, Oxberg, Hökberg and Eldris

Mediatec are proud to be forerunner in modern production techniques by pushing the limits of technolgy making production safer, easier and using less crew.

All for the benefit of the client.
